The hand-made artist book, Aletheia, presents a series of camera-less lumen prints created between 2015-2019, as a by-product of the ongoing body of work “Transcriptions”. This book functions as a meditation on time and truth, on Art making and the creation of meaning. It questions our accustomed and automatic absorption of information in the modern world by presenting the viewer with quietude and contemplation. The term Aletheia is of Greek origins; often translated to meaning truth. The Greeks understood truth not only as correctness but as openness or unconcealment. Aletheia embraces this philosophical notion of truth as openness, as it is made manifest through a coaction of forces – artist’s hand, material, and earth matter.
A timeline of camera-less images created in and of the landscape become their own language – a scripturing resulting from the activity of matter itself. Mirroring my process of lumen printing, the blemishes of each book are left visible – pencil marks, minor creases, tares – inviting the viewer to examine the process of creation and to encounter its materiality. Showcasing an artistic output over the course of four years, Aletheia sets forth time, perception, and individual experience embodied by this archive of non-representational photographs. This book asks us to question how we receive the world before us, while gesturing to a horizon beyond time and context.
